Stories from Past Living Legends Years

For a number of years, the Legends event was of such interest that it got press coverage from Lite-beer drinking Lonesome Larry Lottridge and that infamous sports reporter (Owensboro KY Messenger-Inquirer), J Fenster. They usually got their stories from the lies told in the Fox Den (Edgewood) over several Pitchers of Brew.

Here are a few hopefully for youramusement:

  • Ben Beastly(ie-Beardsley) was quite despondent after playing Lonesome Larry even head -to -head. Ben played in the middle of the fairways are scored a respectable 43. L Square, on the other hand was in the woods, used his putter in the traps as he continually (as is his & partner Mugs McKenzie's custom) downed his healthy quantity of Lites and then made dumb jokes about having the "hole in his sights". He, however, managed to steal out a 39 to soundly thump Big Ben. This prompted Ben to make the following quote: "God looks after fools and drunks. Since you are two for two, you should go on the tour."

and

  • On the 17th (Par 3) , Fenster watched the Pounder (John Provencher) lead off with a yanked pitching wedge. Then Jay Lych (Quarter-Pounder) smacked an 8 iron on the left edge of the green. The all potent Bob Vannini then slammed a sand wedge on the back edge. After addressing the ball with an 8, Fenster proclaimed "I know it's got to be a 9 iron" and went back to his bag for the proper club.

When he hit the ball and as it was sailing straight for the flag only to drop a scant 2 feet from the front of the green, Fenster said "I caught that pretty good". His partner Vannini asked "was that a 9?". Jim replied "sure was" where upon he did the classic double take as he saw the big " 6" on the sole of the club.

"Must've caught it on the toe" he muttered.

Finally:

  • Baer was playing the now-departed Gerry Molter in a brutally hard fought match. The match may have been even going to the difficult 18th. Baer had some 'problems' and putted his ball out ahead of Gerry who had relatively easy 3 1/2 footer left. Baer asked "what is that for?" . Gerry said "ah Gee, I think it's for an 11..."' to which Baer replied "You'd better putt it out; I had a 12 !"
